Savannah East News
Please join us this week when author Jan Croon will be presenting her book titled The War Outside My Window: The Civil War Diary of LeRoy Wiley Gresham, 1860 - 1865.  It's the journal of a Macon, Georgia boy who basically chronicled what he was hearing and seeing on the entirety of Georgia during the Civil War from his bed as he had been seriously injured as a child. He also writes about daily life in a prominent Georgia family (Father was Mayor of Macon for two terms) - books read and even weather. She will have books available for sale and can accept, cash, check, or credit card for the purchase of the book.  RCSE looks forward to seeing all members and guests on Friday!
It was great to see so many members at our meeting this past Friday!  President Cindy Kelley asked for members to mark their calendars for Thursday, October 4 for RCSE Cocktail Hour at The Pirates House and Wednesday, October 10 for the Golfing for Goodness' Sake golfing fundraiser hosted by South, West and RCSE!  Cindy also informed members of a summer abroad scholarship opportunity for college students.  The Norwegian Rotary Advisory Board is inviting three (3) young Georgia students to study in Norway next summer. If you know of a candidate, please contact Kerri or Cindy for more information on the application process.  After all business items were discussed, Laura Lane McKinnon introduced our speaker for the day  - Judy Blackston.
Past President Ben Brewer stepped in for Cindy Kelley this past week to lead our meeting.  Ben asked for members to mark their calendars for Thursday, October 4 for RCSE Cocktail Hour at The Pirates House and Wednesday, October 10 for the Golfing for Goodness' Sake golfing fundraiser hosted by South, West and RCSE!  After all Rotary business items were discussed, Ed Hissam introduced Commander Drew Benke of the Coast Guard Air Station at Hunter Army Airfield.
Judy Blackston and Rich Schwartz of New York Life Savannah will talk to the club about their inaugural A Walk to Remember fundraising event in order to raise funds to provide scholarships to area high school students who have suffered the tragic loss of a parent or guardian.  A Walk to Remember is derived from the nationwide effort, the Coalition to Support Grieving Students,  convened in 2013 by the New York Life Foundation. This Coalition is a unique collaboration of the leading professional organizations representing classroom educators and school professionals who have come together with a common conviction: grieving students need the support and care of the school community. The purpose is to create and share a set of industry-endorsed resources that will empower school communities across America in the ongoing support of their grieving students.
