RCSE packed The Pirate House on Friday! President Kim Campbell announced the Read United Day at Haven Elementary on Friday, January 30 and Andrew Cosey told everyone to be on the lookout for more information about Real Men Read on Thursday, November 13. We had a new member initiation today - welcome to the club Ambria! Once all Rotary business items were discussed, Cheri Dean introduced our speaker, Dr. Bonzo Reddick.
Dr. Reddick presented on health equity which is achieving the best health outcome for each person. Equity is not equality as equity is giving people the chance to live their best lives. There are four non-biomedical factors that influence our health: 1. Social factors, 2. Behaviors, 3. Clinical Care, and 4. Environment. We need to be focus on social determinants and the most important aspect of that is housing. Housing is healthcare! Dr. Reddick talked about the Housing First Model which is finding housing for the homeless population before addressing their other problems. Studies have shown that if a person has housing, there is a decrease in drug use and visits to the hospital. He also discussed that when housing is provided, it saves society money. A great example of the Housing First Model is the Tiny House Project right here in Savannah!
