On Friday, we celebrated 42 years of RCSE with a cake and a vote to update our by-laws!  A huge thank you goes to all members who were able to attend!  Once all Rotary business items were discussed and many Happy dollars collected, Cheri Dean introduced our speaker, Vira Salzburn, who presented on building compassionate communities.

Vira began by reading a poem and stating that we need to embrace human nature with all of its imperfections.  She asked us to answer the question "why am I here?" She also asked "what is it like to show compassion?"  Some of the answers were acknowledging others, listening to others, and going outside of your own comfort zone to help others.  She explained that self compassion is taking the time to pause and reflect on what we need and that it is linked to better overall well being.  Studies have shown that 78% of people are more compassionate to others than they are to themselves. She provided a handout about why self-care matters and how to take action when it comes to our self-care.
