It was nice to see so many RCSE members at our first meeting of 2024! Past President Laura Lane McKinnon presided over the meeting and reminded everyone of RCSE Night Out at the Savannah Ghost Pirates on Thursday, January 25. There are still some seats available! This fundraiser helps support the Youth Programs at Savannah East. She then mentioned that you still have time to help the club sponsor a GRSP student for the 2024-2025 school year! Also at the meeting, we had Rotarian José Boccagni from Rotary Club de Colonia in Colonia, Uruguay pop in to say hello! Once all Rotary Business items were discussed, Kim Campbell introduced our speaker for the day, Elyse Butler, who is Manager of Programs & Special Events at Georgia Historical Society.
Georgia Historical Society (GHS) was founded in 1839 and is a research and education institution with a non circulating library filled with thousands of books and maps. The public has access to Hodgson Hall (the library) through a membership with the GHS or by paying an entry fee of $5 per day. Elyse recommends making an appointment.
GHS does a lot of programming throughout the state. Elyse spoke about the Dooley Distinguished Fellows, a history and race initiative with teachers, and educational programs for grades K-12. One of the public programming initiatives that everyone would be familiar with would be the Georgia Historical Marker Program. There are over 2200 markers throughout the state! Elyse ended her presentation by informing everyone of Super Museum Sunday which will be held on Sunday, February 11. Admissions to certain museums are free on that day from 12-4.
