It was a busy day at RCSE with four visiting Rotarians from the Fitzgerald club! President Ben Brewer had a few announcements: 1. Mark your calendars for Thursday, July 19 for Rotary Night Out at Savannah Bananas! Once again, RCSE is partnering with South and West for a Rotary night at the ballpark. Tickets are $15 and the club will pay the cost for members. You can sign up with Kerri at the meetings. 2. Mark your calendars for Friday, July 27 for the Back to School Breakfast at Haven Elementary. As we have done the past two years, the club and its members will host a breakfast for the teachers at Haven. You can sign up to serve and/or bring items with Kerri at the meetings. Once all Rotary business items were discussed, Gene Harley with Chatham Savannah Narcotics Team (CNT) spoke to the group.
Gene began by describing what CNT does. First, it is the only unit of its kind in Georgia with a state certification. It is a Multi Agency Task Force which is 100% funded by Chatham County. They have a $1.3 million dollar budget each year and are able to keep some of the money seized in raids to help fund other investigations. CNT has two in-house DA's with a 96% conviction rate. There are 4 units in CNT - Tactical, Intelligence, Diversion (investigate doctors who wrongly prescribe opiods) and Major Case (handles year long investigations in order to dismantle large drug rings).
Gene then talked about Operation Snow Plow. CNT, DEA and USP worked in conjunction to take down a cocaine distributor in Savannah. On March 5, 2018, the two heads of the cocaine ring were meeting with their suppliers from Texas. CNT followed the men to the meeting and were able to arrest them as well as the men from Texas. What they found in the hotel room was 28 kilos of cocaine which has a street value of $25 million. The initial raid led to other seizures throughout the county resulting in the seizure of 40 pounds of marijuana, 21 fire arms, and $127,000 cash.
