Details for the February 3rd Meeting

We will be meeting at The Pirates House this Friday in our normal meeting room - Captain Flints Hall.  The side door to the room will be unlocked if you would prefer to use that entrance.

Our speaker for this week is Roy Austin who will talk about Libraries For Kids, International.  Roy last visited RCSE in October 2020, so he will return to give us an update on his non-profit, which helps rural African schools with little or no electricity or internet access establish libraries. For those who are new members: this is a wonderful and inspiring program that you'll want to hear all about!

RCSE looks forward to seeing all members and guests this Friday!

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
January 27, 2023 - Meeting Recap
Past President Laura Lane was our leader at our last meeting of January!  She reminded everyone of the Read United 2023 campaign and the upcoming RCSE Oyster Roast.  Bill Von Alt announced that RCSE will be participating in the Rotary High School Speech Contest and told everyone to stay tuned for further information.  Once all Rotary business items were discussed, fellow Rotarian Roger Moss (newly installed SCCPSS School Board President) presented to the club.

Roger began by talking about his background and how the importance of education was stressed in his home at a young age.  Education is everyone's business as it effects everyone in our society.  Low test scores can be correlated to higher rates in crime.  The Founding Fathers of the United States believed that the purpose of education was to build great citizens.

Although Roger has only been in office was 22 days, he has had a chance to meet with several schools, teachers and students.  He highlighted success stories in area high schools that are helping prepare students for life.  He believes being a good listener is a vital part of his job.  Roger says we are on track to produce some amazing children!  In conclusion, he encouraged everyone to volunteer at a public school.
Read United 2023

What is Read United? Read United is United Way of the Coastal Empire's programmatic response to the promotion of Early Childhood Literacy in our region. Read United will be on February 24th and is replacing Rotary Read In.

Read United Day is the hallmark event, an initiative that seeks to place books in the home of every child in Pre-K through second grade in our region. The program focuses on children in these lower grade levels because we recognize that an early response to the literacy gap that exists in homes of many low-income households can enable children in these homes to succeed.

Read United Day will occur across our region on a single day, February 24th.  This kick-off event will place community leaders and volunteers in classrooms to read to over 19,000 children across our four-county footprint in Pre-K through 2nd Grades. Students will also receive their own books to take home with them during this event to promote literacy nutrition in the home.  Although you can sign up to read at any of the schools, Haven Elementary is RCSE's partner school.  If you would like to sign up, please visit https://www.unitedwayvolunteers.org/aem/general/event/?doc_id=6381.
