Details for the May 29th Meeting

We will be meeting at The Pirates House this Friday in our normal meeting room - Captain Flints Hall.

Our program for this week is Emily Zeytoonjian with ESP (Extra Special People, Inc). ESP was founded in the Athens area in 1986 and continues to serve families in over 30 counties. In January, ESP launched its newest location in Savannah with the the belief that people of all abilities deserve to thrive. This new community is growing with the same heart—where creativity, joy, and inclusion are at the center of everything they do.

RCSE looks forward to seeing all members and guests on Friday!
May Service project - book drive for GROW

Our May service project is a simple, meaningful way to make a real impact and it’s perfectly aligned with Rotary’s commitment to literacy.

The entire month of May, we’re partnering with GROW Initiative GA, a local non-profit that supports vulnerable communities through education, health, and community engagement.  Their summer literacy program is scheduled just around the corner in July, and we have an opportunity to help set these children up for success.

We’re organizing a bilingual book drive and participating is easy:

  • Visit the GROW Initiative GA Amazon wishlist (link is below)
  • Purchase one (or more!!) of the requested bilingual books or other educational items
  • Ship the items to yourself & then bring them into a May meeting (5/29)

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
May 15, 2026 - Meeting Recap
This past Friday, RCSE was treated to a Member Minute from Ambria Berksteiner where she shared with us the blueprint of her life!  After all Rotary business was discussed and Happy dollars collected, Conni Reynolds introduced our speaker for the day, Roger Moss, who is the SCCPSS Board of Eduction President.

Roger began by saying that education provides a foundation and that he wants children to have a choice filled life.  When kids can't read, they tend to act out.  SCCPSS is utilizing the Science of Reading to help increase literacy in our school system.  He encouraged everyone to be patient as it will take a little while for the program to work.  The goal is that 95% of 3rd graders will be reading at level within 5 years.  Literary is more than comprehending words.  It also is about writing and communicating effectively.  Roger concluded his presentation by saying at the end of the day, children need to feel like they belong.
