Our program for the meeting this week is Officer Installation! Join us as we say thank you to those members who served on the RCSE Executive Board this past year and welcome the new officers for the upcoming Rotary year. We are asking all PAST ROTARY PRESIDENTS to participate in handing down the gavel to President Elect, Conni Reynolds.
We will also be assembling bags for our pet supply drive. The process will be simple: members will help open the larger bags, portion the food into gallon bags, label each bag as dog or cat food, and then place the filled bags into boxes or bins for delivery.
RCSE looks forward to seeing all members and guests on Friday!
As part of our upcoming pet food drive, we’ll be collecting dog and cat food to support seniors served through SCI. Many seniors who receive pet food assistance have difficulty managing large bags, so we’ll also be turning this into a brief hands-on service project during our June 26 meeting.
We are asking members to purchase specific dog and cat foods and bring them to the June 29 meeting. During the meeting, we’ll spend about 20 minutes working together assembly-line style to divide the larger bags of food into gallon-size bags that are easier for seniors to handle. On Friday, RCSE had a special presentation from DG Terry Adkins who honored Bruce Montgomery with a Lifetime Achievement Award. He thanked Bruce for all the advice, counsel, and selfless hours of work he has contributed to District 6920 over his time as a Rotarian. Congratulations, Bruce! RCSE is proud to have you as a member of our club. After the presentation, Conni Reynolds introduced our speaker for the day, Maggie Lee, who is a data reporter for The Current.
Maggie wrote an article for The Current in 2023 about which entities do or do not pay property taxes in Chatham County. It is a Georgia state law that nonprofit educational institutions do not pay property taxes. This is not unique to Georgia as most states have similar laws. SCAD has 106 parcels of land in Chatham County that are worth $479 million. If they were to pay taxes, it would equate to around $7 million. Houses of worship are also exempt from paying property taxes and they are the largest holder of properties in our area who do not pay taxes. Maggie talked about Harvard University and the PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) program they have with the town of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
