January 6, 2017 Meeting Recap
What a great first meeting of the 2017 year!  This was the highest attended meeting of the Fiscal Year with 75% of club members present.  RCSE had a banner exchange with a visiting Rotarian from the East Greenwich, Rhode Island club before Deidre Harrison spoke to the club about her work with Savannah Working Against Human Trafficking (SWAHT).
SWAHT is a local, volunteer organization that provides support to victims of Human Trafficking and has been operating in our area for the past 10 years.  Human Trafficking is the equivalent to modern day slavery.  There are three forms of human trafficking - 1. Labor Trafficking, 2. Sex Trafficking, and 3. Indentured Servitude.  The people being trafficked are part of a grooming process where they are coerced into this way of life.  The real issue with trafficking is demand.  A way we can reduce demand in Savannah is by supporting local businesses.  By doing this, we are using a product that we can trust while helping the local economy as well as the environment.  In Georgia, the majority of sex victims are USA citizens who are minorities.  Poverty is a major factory in sex trafficking and the average age a person becomes a prostitute in Georgia is between the ages of 13-15 years old.  If you suspect trafficking in your area,  please call the National Human Trafficking Hotline number - 1-888-373-7888.
