It was another great meeting at The Pirates House this past week. Many members and guest were there to hear Christina Kelly, local author, talk about her book. Before Tina began, the club heard from guest Jessica Auner about her recent experience volunteering with The Salvation Army during Hurricane Matthew. If you are interested in volunteering with The Salvation Army, please contact Kayla Lentz at kayla.lentz@uss.salvationarmy.org. Once all announcements were made, the club was ready to hear from author Tina Kelly.
Tina began by saying she has always loved words (she is a cruciverbalist having nine crossword puzzles published in The New York Times) and has always had a dream to write a novel. When she and her husband moved to Savannah, she finally decided to sit down and begin writing. Her beginning drafts started out as a mystery about a girl living in a gated community. However, after a while, she switched and began writing about funny situations that happen when you become a certain age. This was inspired by her husband's retirement! Tina joined a writing club and after 3 1/2 years of writing, her book was complete. A friend then introduced her to someone at Harper Collins and she sent in her query letter. The rest is history and the book, Good Karma, was published!
Tina said there are four things people can learn from her experience. 1. Have a goal, 2. Find your passion - hers was to tell a story about growing older, 3. Being a part of a team will help keep you accountable, 4. Ask for help and say "yes" when someone offers to help you. Christina Kelly will be speaking at The Savannah Book Festival on Saturday, February 17 at 12:30. To learn more about Tina and her book, please visit ChristinaKellyAuthor.com
