We will be assembling packages that our District Grant funds have purchased in conjunction with P.A.C.K. (located at 4 Mall Terrace, Savannah, GA 31406). This service opportunity is open to all RCSE members and their families -- including young children! What is P.A.C.K.? It stands for: People of Action Caring for Kids, and is a local 501(c)3 non-profit that provides bags of food to children in need on weekends and holidays. They also provide clothing, toiletries, and comfort items to children in crisis. It began as one family's mission to teach their children to serve others, but has grown to now deliver over 12,000 care bags each month to 37 schools and community centers in the Savannah area, with the help of an all-volunteer team. |

The Solar Death Ray
Aug 20, 2021
Wes Jackson is a maker in every sense of the word! He has been inventing and building things since he developed dexterity. Wes was born in Chad, Africa to two wildlife biologists. His family moved to the Athens, Georgia area when he was 5 years old, after his dad accepted a position with the University of Georgia. Wes graduated college (for the first time) with a Bachelors degree in biological science. He earned a second degree in agricultural engineering. He began his first career as a civil engineer. However, he realized that his true passion was helping people in a way that civil engineering didn't fulfill, so after some soul searching, Wes went back to school to earn a Bachelors degree in Nursing. In 2017, Wes was in the running for South Magazine's Greatest Nurses contest. Wes invented and built the Solar Death Ray, a mobile solar cooker, over 10 year ago. He joins us to tell us about what inspired him to build the Solar Death Ray and to give us a demonstration. An Update on the First District

Sep 01, 2021 - Nov 19, 2021 1:30 PM
The past year and a half has been challenging for all of us. Health and business concerns during the pandemic have made it difficult for Rotarians to gather the way we're used to, or to participate in typical service projects. While this can be a bit discouraging, as Rotarians, our commitment to serve others calls for us to get a bit creative, as we find safe ways to have a positive impact in our community. With this in mind, our Service Project committee has recently purchased several hundred Thanksgiving cards and we'll be partnering with the Meals on Wheels program of Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI) to distribute the cards to homebound and isolated seniors the week of Thanksgiving. We're asking each RCSE member to take at least one packet of 12 Thanksgiving cards and to handwrite a positive and uplifting message in each one, to brighten the day of the recipient and help them feel more connected during a time of year that can be especially lonely for many. The packete will include some suggested phrases, making it an easy, but meaningful effort. You can pick up a packet of blank cards at the regular Rotary meetings on Fridays, starting Sept. 10th, or you can email Laura Lane McKinnon (llmckinnon@comcast.net) to request a packet to be dropped off at your home or office. Finished cards can be brought back to a meeting or, upon request, one of the members of the Service Project committee (Andrew Cosey, Ben Lingle, Laura Lane McKinnon, and Katie Wohlust) will make arrangements to collect the cards from your home or office, observing appropriate COVID protocols. The finished cards will be delivered to SCI on Friday, Nov. 19th after our regularly scheduled Rotary meeting. We hope that each RCSE member will make an effort to participate in this service project and help to lift the spirits of a homebound or isolated senior in our community this Thanksgiving! It's an easy way to put a smile on someone's face and to live the Rotary motto of "service above self." |
