The past year and a half has been challenging for all of us. Health and business concerns during the pandemic have made it difficult for Rotarians to gather the way we're used to, or to participate in typical service projects. While this can be a bit discouraging, as Rotarians, our commitment to serve others calls for us to get a bit creative, as we find safe ways to have a positive impact in our community. With this in mind, our Service Project committee has recently purchased several hundred Thanksgiving cards and we'll be partnering with the Meals on Wheels program of Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI) to distribute the cards to homebound and isolated seniors the week of Thanksgiving. We're asking each RCSE member to take at least one packet of 12 Thanksgiving cards and to handwrite a positive and uplifting message in each one, to brighten the day of the recipient and help them feel more connected during a time of year that can be especially lonely for many. The packete will include some suggested phrases, making it an easy, but meaningful effort. You can pick up a packet of blank cards at the regular Rotary meetings on Fridays, starting Sept. 10th, or you can email Laura Lane McKinnon (llmckinnon@comcast.net) to request a packet to be dropped off at your home or office. Finished cards can be brought back to a meeting or, upon request, one of the members of the Service Project committee (Andrew Cosey, Ben Lingle, Laura Lane McKinnon, and Katie Wohlust) will make arrangements to collect the cards from your home or office, observing appropriate COVID protocols. The finished cards will be delivered to SCI on Friday, Nov. 19th after our regularly scheduled Rotary meeting. We hope that each RCSE member will make an effort to participate in this service project and help to lift the spirits of a homebound or isolated senior in our community this Thanksgiving! It's an easy way to put a smile on someone's face and to live the Rotary motto of "service above self." |

Puerto Rico Project
Nov 19, 2021
Leslie Mattingly and her husband, Fmr. US Senator Mack Mattingly (GA), have worked in Puerto Rico since 1977, largely through the Conservation Trust. Following the hurricanes of 2017, they worked hand-in-hand with staff there -- full-time for over a year -- to do all they could to help. A strong Rotarian of several decades, Leslie worked hard to mobilize an "army" of 250 skilled, experienced PLN staff members, together with Rotary to develop a large and successful sustainable agriculture program. Funded by a Rotary Global Grant, with support thus far exceeding $400,000, they're supporting an island-wide program of economic development through sustainable agro-ecology. The program trains farmers and creates an entire economy chain for fresh produce and food across Puerto Rico. The project is now in Phase 2 and Leslie will be giving us a detailed overview. |

Savannah CASA
Jan 21, 2022
Savannah/Chatham County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) recruits and trains volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse and neglect.
CASA takes a holistic approach to ensure the child’s psychological, physical, educational, and other needs are met while advocating for permanency in the child’s life. CASA volunteers work tirelessly to reduce the amount of time a child spends in foster care by working closely with the Department of Family and Children Services and the Juvenile Court. Studies have shown that a child who is appointed a CASA volunteer spends less time in foster care, has fewer placement disruptions, and performs better in school. Our vision is a community where every child who has experienced abuse or neglect is given the opportunity to thrive in a safe and loving home. |

Mobility & Breathing
Jan 28, 2022 12:00 PM
We all move and breathe, but do we all do it as well as we can? Our bodies are adaption machines, conforming to our daily activities. Although not all adaptations are beneficial. A large portion of the population now spend the majority of their time in a seated, back-rounded head-forward position. All while breathing short, shallow chest breaths. Incomplete movement patterns have hidden our natural movement potential. The accumulation of stress in our daily lives has locked some in a fight or flight negative feedback loop. Joints ache less when properly positioned and strenthened, sleep and digestion can improve just through various breathing techniques. |

Feb 18, 2022 12:00 PM
The Caretta Research Project (CRP) is a hands-on research, conservation, and education project that studies and protects the threatened loggerhead sea turtles that nest on the beaches of Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia. It begain in 1973, and continues toda as the longest continuously run tagging program in the United States. The CRP is also an "eco-vacation," where the public can join us on Wassaw Island for one-week sessions between May and early September, researching and protecting the loggerhead sea turtles. Kris will talk about the different species of sea turtles that we have encountered along the Georgia coast and reasons for their historic decline, recent recovery efforts, and walk you through a field season on Wassaw to show how the CRP is helping to save Georgia's loggerhead sea turtle population. |

Mar 01, 2022 - Apr 01, 2022
The RCSE Service Project committee has put together packets of pre-cut construction paper squares, markers, and stickers, plus 75 suggested phrases so that each member can create inspirational and encouraging messages for children who recieve a care package from our charity partner, P.A.C.K. These notes go into each bag of food that is given to kids and families in need at one of the 39 schools or community centers that P.A.C.K. works with to do their part to ensure that no one goes hungry in our community. No artistic talent is required -- just a few minutes of your time to help a local child feel a bit more confident and encouraged. This is a project that members can share with their own children, grandchildren, spouses, or partners - truly, many hands make light work! P.A.C.K. puts over 17,000 notes into care packages each month, so this will be something that we do regularly and is a very easy way to help brighten someone's day by letting them know that their community cares for them. Please pick-up your packet at a regular Friday meeting or email Laura Lane (llmckinnon@comcast.net) or Andrew (amcosey@gmail.com) to request your packet. Packets can be returned at any time during the month of March.

Sleep Related Issues That Affect School Performance
Mar 11, 2022 12:00 PM
Is it bad behavior? Or lack of good sleep? The prevalence of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) in children is as high as 13%, but who’s counting? Are there enough professionals trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of SDB? Currently, there are only 270 pediatric sleep specialists in the country. It’s imperative for all individuals who interact with children on a daily basis to be familiar with these signs. The field of myofunctional therapy studies orofacial growth and development including the role of breastfeeding, early feeding, tongue restriction, nutrition, sleep disturbances, and breathing issues. Sleep-disordered breathing is an umbrella term for several chronic conditions in which partial or complete cessation of breathing occurs many times throughout the night, resulting in daytime sleepiness or fatigue that interferes with a person’s ability to function and reduces quality of life. Symptoms may include snoring, pauses in breathing, and disturbed sleep. |

Targeted Muscle Reinnervation – The New Standard of Care for Amputees
Mar 25, 2022 12:00 PM
Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) is a procedure performed in patients undergoing limb amputation or in patients with painful neuromas after nerve injury. When a nerve is severed or injured, it attempts to regenerate. If the nerve does not have a clear target to regenerate toward, this process can result in a disorganized mass of nerve tissue called a neuroma. TMR involves rerouting severed or injured nerves to new muscle targets using microsurgical techniques to provide the nerve endings with a new muscle to innervate. The new muscle target encourages the nerve to regenerate in an organized fashion, rather than disorganized regeneration that can lead to neuroma formation and pain. Peripheral nerves are severed during amputation, resulting in nerve endings that can form neuromas or cause phantom limb pain. TMR can be performed after limb amputation to prevent formation of painful neuromas and decrease phantom limb pain. TMR can also improve a person's ability to use and control certain types of prosthetics. In appropriate candidates, TMR can be performed at the time of amputation or in a delayed setting after amputation.
