Thank you to everyone who participated in the No Frills Fundraiser benefiting PolioPlus. The grand total raised was $2595!!! If you did not contribute and would still like to do so, this Friday, March 3, is the LAST day we will be accepting donations. Thank you again for a wonderful fundraiser!
This past Friday, RCSE was treated to a talk by Jamie Espina with Hospice Savannah. Jamie started the talk by stating this is the first time in history where there are more seniors in the world than children. With this increase in the elderly population, a new set of issues has arose which include chronic illness.
The Hospice concept is care and compassion. The first Hospice was founded in 1975 in Connecticut and was brought to Savannah in 1979 by Anne Stewart. In order to be eligible for Hospice, a person must be terminally ill, have a prognosis of 6 months or less, or is not pursuing any further treatment for their illness. Hospice Savannah offers many different services other than housing or in home care. Some of the programs include grievement support, the Stewart Center (consultative service with doctors to help provide palliative care), and the Edel Caregiver Institute. All caregiver services provided are free to the community. Hospice Savannah raises money through grants, personal donations, and EAP services and is a not-for-profit hospice. Hospice Savannah has a 28 bed house on Eisenhower.
