Please be advised that for the next three meetings - March 24, March 31, April 7 - the Savannah Music Festival will be hosting concerts beginning at 12:30 P.M. at the Charles H. Morris Center. Plan accordingly as parking might be limited over the next few weeks.
This past meeting, David Harris, Director of The Lucas Theatre, spoke to the club about the history of The Lucas as well as current happenings at the theatre.
The Lucas Theatre was built in 1920 for $400,000 by Adam Lucas who grew up in Savannah, GA. During his career, Adam Lucas opened over 40 theatre's in the country but The Lucas was the only one that bore his name. The doors officially opened in 1921 with a feature presentation of Camille. The Lucas soon became the place to be seen in town and in 1927 was the first public building to install air conditioning. The Lucas' heyday lasted through the 1940's. During the 1950's-1970's, people started moving away from downtown resulting in the theatre closing its doors on May 20, 1976. A couple of businesses tried to occupy the space but were not successful. When a few people heard that The Lucas might be torn down in order for a parking lot to be built, they formed a nonprofit to save the theatre. They spent 8 years fundraising and in May 1995, restoration began on The Lucas. On December 1, 2000, The Lucas reopened with three showings of Gone with the Wind. However, eight months later, the theatre was on the brink of having to close again. Thankfully, SCAD stepped in and became a benefactor of The Lucas. Currently, The Lucas is thriving once again but is always looking for ways to maintain viability. The Lucas recently celebrated its 95th Anniversary with a block party and is increasing show offerings. The Lucas is home to the Savannah Film Festival and Savannah Philharmonic and has the ability to show movies, theatre, dance, and cabarets as well as host conferences and meetings.
