On Saturday, April 29, 2017, Claude Wilson passed away. He was born January 1, 1930 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in June of 1951, and obtained an MBA from New York University. Claude worked at various financial companies in New York City, and then later had his own firm, CAW Equities in Greenwich, CT until moving to Savannah. He was married to Janet M. Bowden, of Greenwich in 1963 and was the father of two children, Elizabeth B. Wilson, and Marshall C. Wilson. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. Claude's 20 year anniversary as a member of RCSE was on May 9, 2017. We will miss you Claude.
The meeting on May 5th began with a moment of silence in honor of Claude Wilson who passed away on April 29, 2017. Afterwards, the club had good news when Beth Ferencsik announced her son had received a scholarship through Rotary to which will help defray the cost of his Master's degree which he will be working on in France for the next two years. Beth Hancock passed around sheets with each member's information regarding their Paul Harris Fellow status. The club, as well as Ed Donoghue, has points and is willing to donate to a member if they would like to become a Paul Harris Fellow. If you have any questions about this, please contact Beth Hancock or Ed Donoghue. Once all business was finished, Dr. Mark Jenkins spoke to the club.
Dr. Jenkins is a doctor at Chatham Orthopedics and has been practicing medicine in the Savannah area for the past 16 1/2 years. He primarily works on trauma and joints but also does general orthopedics as well. The most common type of orthopedic pain as one gets older is knee and hand arthritis. Arthritis begins when you start losing cartilage (genetics and prior injuries can factor into loss) and once it is gone, it is gone! Currently, there is not a good way to restore cartilage. He also mentioned that you treat arthritis based on pain and not on x-ray images.
Once he was done discussing arthritis, a member asked Dr. Jenkins about the increase in injuries in children who play sports. Dr. Jenkins believes some of the increase is due to the fact that children are specializing in one sport early on and play that sport year round. He says playing multiple sports is best on your body. He then talked about hip replacements and said if you are over the age of 70 and have a hip replacement, there is a 50% 2 year mortality for those individuals. The high mortality rate can be attributed to muscle atrophy, bone density, not moving and blood clots. Lastly, Dr. Jenkins talked about the import role Vitamin D plays in helping your bones absorb calcium.
