The last meeting of the 2016 calendar year was one not to be missed! Good fun, fellowship, a new member induction and a great speaker were a wonderful way to end the year. Mary Anne Biel, Vice President of Corporate Ethics at Memorial Health, spoke to the club about ethical issues in healthcare that are at our door.
Mary Anne said the most important conversation you need to have with your spouse is one concerning your Advanced Care Plan. In the state of Georgia, a doctor is bound to honor the patient's wishes. Currently, technological advances in medicine are occurring at such a fast rate that the FDA can not keep up. It is steering us into a direction where one will have to choose between technological advances versus evidence based medicine. Most consumers want something that is quick and therefore, new treatments will be tried before all evidence is in supporting its efficacy and/or long term benefits or risks.
A lot of conversations happening now is in regards to genetics such as designer babies, how long to keep embryos frozen, what to do with frozen embryos, gene editing and engineering, and how much one should disclose to their doctor and insurance about their genetic make up. Some fear that people who wear medical devices will end up being murdered from afar by others hacking into their medical device and changing the settings. Some individuals are electing to switch out a healthy body part for a robotic one. All of these topics as well as many more are creating very interesting philosophical discussions in and around the health care industry.
The Rotary Club of Savannah East welcomed a talk on one of Savannah famous landmarks, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Lafayette Square. Club member, Peter Palucci volunteers his time giving tours of the fascinating Cathedral, and he is clearly passionate about the Cathedral. He revealed the Cathedral’s history dated back to the when the French Catholic émigrés established Savannah’s first parish, called the Congrégation de Saint Jean-Baptiste in the late 1700’s. Over the centuries there were building moves and a fire which almost destroyed the Cathedral. Eventually the magnificent structure that adorns Savannah today reigned triumphant.
Peter went on to discuss the many incredible murals in the church. While he was only able to scratch the surface of the Cathedral, he will be back again to reveal more on the Catherdal’s organ and its incredible acoustics.
The next Christmas Concert performance at The Cathedral is on Sunday, December 18 at 3:00 PM. The Cathedral Choir will be performing. Thank you Peter.

As part of our ongoing support of Haven Elementary, we will have a Box Tops collection at every meeting. If you don't have a child or grandchild's school you are currently supporting with your Box Tops, please bring them to our Rotary Club meetings. For every 10 box tops, the school will receive $1 - and those dollars will add up quickly!
Look for the pink collection container at the next meeting!
See the Box Tops website for a list of participating products if you are not familiar with the program.
