Thank you to all who attended the meeting this past Friday. President Ben Brewer announced the club raised $147 the month of July through Raffle, Fines and Happy and that this money will be donated to Social Apostolate of Savannah. As a reminder, each month a new charity will be picked through a drawing to receive the funds raised from Raffle, Fines and Happy. The winner of the charity drawing for August is the Homeless Authority! After all Rotary business items were discussed, Joel Vos, Education Coordinator at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and his associate spoke to the club.
Joel is currently stationed at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and has also served in Alaska. It is definitely a bit warmer in Savannah! Joel provided a history of the USFWS and noted it is a national service and not the same as local or state parks. Locally the Savannah NWR was established in 1927 as a preserve and breeding ground for native birds. Today, the refuge covers over 29,000 acres, and is home to a variety of birds and other wildlife. Open for viewing and enjoyment by the general public, the Savannah NWR is also open at certain times of the year to hunting, fishing and boating. There are two primary public use areas of the refuge that visitors can drive to: the Visitor Center, located on U.S. Hwy 17, approximately 7 miles north of downtown Savannah, GA, and 7 miles south of Hardeeville, SC, and the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive, located on GA-25/SC-170, approximately one mile east of Port Wentworth, GA. It really is a jewel that many locals have not taken advantage of so please go and enjoy this local refuge!
Jason was originally a member of Savannah Rotary East in the early 2000’s when he was a Commercial Lender/AVP with The Coastal Bank. He was brought into the club by Jean Iaderosa. He spent several years with the club including Sergeant at Arms under Tony O’Reilly. In 2008 he grew a beard and opened a bar in God’s Country, otherwise known as Athens, Georgia. Upon his return to Savannah, Jason rejoined the club on October 17, 2014 sponsored by Dr. Stanley Lester. At this time, Jason was a carefree bachelor with nothing but free time on his hands and employed at TMX Finance. Since then, he got married on May 2nd, 2015 to the former Lindsay Timmons of Thomasville, Ga. and on September 21st, 2016, Jason and Lindsay welcomed their first child with the birth of their son, Bridger Cannon Jones. After much pleading, bribing, and cajoling from Jeff Heeder, Jason started his career at Merrill Lynch as a Financial Advisor on March 24th, 2017. He can be reached at 912-351-2348 or jones.j@ml.com. For those with money to invest, he can also be reached via beeper, Morse Code, or smoke signal. Jason enjoys spending time with his family, and reminiscing about when he had time to enjoy boating, golf, rugby, tennis, Gridiron, Debtor’s Society, and college football.
Thank you to all the members of Savannah East who donated money and helped served breakfast on July 28 to the Faculty and Staff at Haven Elementary in their beautiful new school! What a great crowd of volunteers to welcome the teachers and staff and to be there to donate books in Claude Wilson's memory. Superintendent Levett has announced a new initiative to support the new literacy program of ONE MILLION BOOKS to be added to area schoolrooms. Gently used and new books are needed to meet this challenge. Savannah East will be donating a book in honor of each speaker who presents at the club this year. Also, stay tuned for information about a book drive for Haven. RCSE is looking forward to helping with the 1,000,000 book challenge!
